There are two things that, with her closing comments, PT shows she doesn't understand:
1st: That everybody brings the argument home. My first concern IS can I fill the car with petrol? Can I fill the kids with food? Can I keep a roof over their heads? Or am I being taxed too much to allow me to do that?
The first concern isn't an abstraction of a generic village of mud huts in a third world country that has an approaching high tide mark.
That is not racist, that is not selfish, it is simple common sense that I care more about my kids and my family that someone else's. It is also practical:
2nd: When Toynbee next flies to Italy, and the stewardess goes through the safety procedures, she'll get to the bit where she talks about Oxygen Masks. "If you have a child with you," they'll say, "Put on your own oxygen mask first." This is because if you don't you'll be too weak, and possibly unconscious to put it on if you have to wait until you've put one on your child first.
You have to take care of yourself, or you will not be in a position to take care of anyone else.
It must be so ince to be as caring about the world, as Polly Toynbee.
But she is wrong. If you do not care about the poor old lady in the next street, or the family in town who lost everything when their sub-post office was closed, then the fact that you claim to care about "Global Warming" or the plight of a tribe in Wherever does not matter.
Fix your own house before you dare give your advice to your neighbour.

Hang on... are we supposed to look after our people and how they can fill their tank number one, or supposed to care about starving people abroad over and above our fuel needs? Richard, I'm confused!

Where's the bitch-slap?
All I see is Littlejohn talking rubbish about biofuels, then arguing (perversely) that his empty tank is more important than food shortages overseas.
Toynbee's dig about his Daily Mail salary is excellent though!
Bit rich of Littlejohn to have a go at Toynbee for not understanding what goes on the in the 'real world'... After all, she spent six months investigating those living on minimum wage, and wrote a pretty good book about it.
Every time I fill the car up I cringe and try not to look at the price.
If she had written a book on the low paid AND PAID ATTENTION then she'd know that classic quote, starting with "Annual income twenty pounds..."

Not exactly a "smackdown", more like seeing that Littlejohn can only resort to personal abuse instead of making a coherent argument.
Seriously - Littlejohn can talk the talk about "stealth taxes" and increasing food prices, but does anyone seriously think that he gives a shit?
I don't think he's crying bitter tears for the man on the street when he's holed up in his Florida mansion, emailing his diatribes about modern Britain from the poolside. Do you?

as LJ pointed out to the hypocrite Toynbee, he aint the one advocating that joe public should sacrifice themselves on the altar of progressive collectivism. For all i know , he might be a bastard , but at least he's consistent. He's got his money,.. and he aint trying to cripple anyone from attaining the same status, in the manner Toynbee endorses.

Toyntwat symbolises every middle class, hand wringing, slimy, hypocritical, Guardianista, feminista that crawled out from under a rock to play holier than thou. Good to see her shown up for what she is. Well done Littlejohn!
